You only pay the $5 if you use it. And some plans include international calls so no extra charge, calls back to Aus would be included in most plans as well.
Also, SMS messaging - which IMO is a big thing, especially for the busy business travelling types. Works if you are roaming normally but not through WP.
For anything more than a few days use, WP is definitely cheaper - whether the value is there for users will become more apparent in the next few months.
