    Thursday local wrap.

The Australian sharemarket closed higher this afternoon as the big banks pushed the index higher through the day after a subdued start.

Investors weren’t phased by the news quantitative easing has come to an end but the Australian dollar tumbled a full US cent on the back of the news and is now trading at 87.76 US cents, down from 88.93 US cents before the FOMC statement.

At 4.15pm (AEDT) the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index rose 0.52%, to 5,476.2 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index added 0.48%, to 5,457.1 points.

Financials were again the heroes of the session, lifting 0.9% as a sector.

NAB rose 0.8% to $34.64 after investors saw the bank’s full year profit results. The figures showed a slide in profit but, more importantly chief executive Andrew Thorburn was talking about stemming the bleeding from NAB’s under-performing UK division and potentially offloading it.

ANZ lifted 1% to $33.26 ahead of its full year results, which we’ll be reporting tomorrow.
Westpac gained 0.85% to $34.46 and CBA added 0.7% to $80.17.

The materials sector weighed on the market again, losing 0.5%, with BHP Billiton falling 0.7% to $33.55.

Echo Entertainment posted a hefty 6.2% gain to $3.76 after a trading update, released this afternoon, said the company expects earnings first half earnings to lift up to 31% this year
