Firstly, Australia was not at war with anyone at the time he was in Afghanistan. He certainly was "punished", but that was by not providing the rule of law, or Geneva convention rights. He never had a trial.
And I am defending our civil rights, many of which have been eroded since the 3 towers were demolished.
I am not against his being charged for treason, at least he would have had a trial! But to incarcerate someone for life, without a trial, well I certainly hope you never become someone with political or bureaucratic power.
