scaggs - Let's look at what's "overwhelmingly accepted as scientific fact". The latest IPCC report, "CLIMATE CHANGE 2013 The Physical Science Basis" (AR5 Final Draft) states in its Summary for Policymakers that "Equilibrium climate sensitivity is likely in the range 1.5°C to 4.5°C" and "No best estimate for equilibrium climate sensitivity can now be given because of a lack of agreement on values across assessed lines of evidence and studies.". This is already a reduction from the previous IPCC report (AR4) where the range was 2.0 to 4.5, and the best estimate was given as 3.2.
At the lower end of the new range, there is absolutely no danger. You can do the sums any which way you like, but at a climate sensitivity of 1.5 you won't be able to find enough fossil fuel to burn in order generate enough of a temperature increase to be dangerous.
In other words, what is "overwhelmingly accepted as scientific fact" does not necessarily represent any danger.
