"Solar is already at parity in most states with coal fired power". If true, then people will switch to solar in droves. Unfortunately, I don't think it is true - yet - because the studies that say this don't seem to be looking at the full picture. People still need to stay on the grid for when the sun isn't shining, and the grid costs per kwh will go up as usage goes down. In other words, the use of domestic solar causes the per-kwh cost of grid electricity to increase even though the cost of coal-fired generation hasn't changed. Getting off the grid completely (eg. with battery back-up) is still not economically viable. Grid solar has extra cost too, namely the need for back-up.

You don't have to worry about whether 'parity' is true or not, people's actions will tell you. If and when it is true, people will switch to solar in droves. I wouldn't be investing in the grid right now...
