This paper was published in January - Clinical applications of acellular dermal matrices: A review.
The review is limited to English language articles published from 1999 to 2020.
The review highlights the fact that, while use of dermal matrices was originally limited to severe burns, usage has spread to an increasing number of surgical subspecialties and procedures.
Below is a summary of the clinical applications of dermal matrix covered in the review. No mention of stents.
Burns
Wound Care
DFUs
VLUs
Axillary and cubital joint dermis wounds
Tumour resection surgery
Radial forearm flap donor site closure
Abdominal wall/hernia
Breast Reconstruction
Orthopaedic
Achilles tendon repair
Foot/ankle arthroplasty
Rotator cuff repair
Glenoid resurfacing
Forearm/Hand/Wrist - trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis, Dupuytren’s disease, postoperative and post-traumatic neuropathic wrist pain, ligament reconstruction in arthritic hands.
Hip and pelvis – augmentation of gluteus medius and minimus repairs, filling of capsular defects to create hip stability in hip reconstructions
Craniofacial surgery
Scalp coverage
Spacer graft for upper eyelid retraction procedures
Management of nasal lining deficiency in Le Fort 1 osteotomy
Andrology
Penile girth enhancement and augmentation
Gynaecology and gynaecological oncology
Vaginoplasty
Pelvic cavity support and volume improvement
Otolaryngology, oral surgery
Gingival recession
Regeneration of bone/soft tissue in dental implants
Otolaryngology/ear, nose and throat (ENT)
Laryngotracheal and pharyngeal reconstruction
I was amused by the discussion towards the end of the article of how ethical restraints need to be considered in choice of dermal matrix. The authors note that Jewish and Islamic dietary restrictions may or may not translate to tissue implantation; Buddhists and Seventh-day Adventists are often vegan, which could lead them to refuse any animal-derived tissue products; some Hindus and Sikhs are opposed to all human and animal-derived products, whereas other Hindus allow the use of donated human tissues.
So much simpler to stick to use of a synthetic dermal matrix!
