If you're confident you are going to be right about where the stock will end up, and have the patience to wait - then the shorts could indeed be your friend when they need to buy back the stock.

About 6.5% of PNV's stock was shorted in the lead up to the very very quick run to $4. That gives you an idea of what could happen.

Shorts are now about 9%, and if it remains the case when they report their full year results, we could see an even bigger run up in the share price if PNV delivers.

When you understand the business, and recognise where it is going - you don't need to be right today, tomorrow, next week, next month or whatever. I've owned countless stocks where I've been down 20, 30, even 50% on my initial investment, watching people on HC gleefully pile on saying the direction of the share price shows "you're wrong, you're wrong", then not too long after I'm selling it for big profits when my investment thesis plays out.

This happens all the time. Stocks don't go up because you or I own it. But if you are right in what a business is worth, the share price will get there. (If you're wrong it won't though!)
