I presume this is David Williamson the playwrite. Not without a quid and that is the point.
"aspirational" is not a swear word. It affords a better standard of living for one and one's family. It usually comes from hard work and productivity for the nation. It also gives one's children a work ethic and affords them a better education. All good things.
When you are affluent you can then turn your attention to more esoteric things like environment, justice for all, arts etc. Of course that is not a prerequisite.
The other point is that we all have different levels of intelligence and interests. These are gifts and so not a point of pride. It is easy to look down on those of inferior intellect instead of being thankful for the vagaries of your genes.
All the same, it is a great article. Well written and thought provoking.
