Given the alacrity with which a new chairman was identified, recruited and appointed, it seems as if Franklyn might have realized some time in advance that he would not be re-elected.
Either that or he simply decided that the company would be better off with a person of different background as CEO and unselfishly took the appropriate steps.
As you say, we may never know what went on behind the scenes, but whatever the background story is, I think that the development is positive for the company and its technology right now.
