hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like Hyundai Nexo still have lithium ion batteries (although smaller than pure EVs). The fuel cell can't respond to driver inputs instantaneously like batteries can, there also needs to be somewhere for excess energy from the fuel cell to go and also energy from regenerative braking.
