rkb - Toyota is intending to use next year's Olympic Games to showcase the new solid state lithium battery technology that they and Panasonic are developing. Orocobre (ASX: ORE) is partnering 75:25 with an affiliate of Toyota to build a 10k t pa LiOH plant in Japan with Toyota standing behind the less than 1% interest non recourse debt facility being used to build the plant. The Japanese government is also giving a $27m subsidy. All of the LiOH from that plant is to go to a battery factory that Toyota and Panasonic are to build near the Orocobre LiOH plant.
As it is with Orocobre and Toyota so I suspect it will be with Pilbara and POSCO should the deal be inked.
(and no, given the multipliers of a car manufacturing sector, the Australian government would have done much better spending the money on maintaining the domestic car manufacturing sector than wasting it on building a bunch of submarines locally).
