There was a lot of churn between long buyers and long sellers that day. About half the gross shorts were covered during the day and about half remained as extra net shorts at the end of the day.
Some read the high gross numbers as a sign that shorters were covering, however now the net have been reported it's clear this was not the case. I don't think you can draw too many conclusions from the % gross shorts each day.
Interestingly tho, capital shorted has been amazing consistent since Tues at 0.8-0.9% each day and a very stable (~1.5M shares) ... as has the SP (between 48.5 and 50c). I've no idea if any conclusions could be drawn from that either tho.
