There is the wild card factor and not all degree qualified people are competent and not all non degree people are idiots.
Sometimes a 'gun' employee is out there and you won't get an opportunity to size them up through a proxy.

One of my 'gun' locksmiths came from being a Merchant Navy Cook. Took a bit of initial training but he already had the right attitude to start with and he had an innate ability I could work with.
