Their success is that retail buyers now buy very few other than at a low price rather than crib the SP up a cent or two a day. Retail buyers are pretty sure the short sellers will eventually come to them. When they (shortsellers) are ready they can launch some big buys quickly. All is going well for them - but a takeover bid would be absolutely horrendous for them unless, of course, they are working on behalf of the potential bidder.
