Me too. The issue Barg brings up (I think) is that to charge a half decent EV battery will take more than what most (at least current) home PV systems can generate and if cars are not in the driveway/underground storage warehouse during sunlight hours they will need energy storage systems to hold the free sun energy until they can be plugged in.

If you work on an average rate of conversion of current PV panel technology and average insolation rates in Australia, I think a 5kW panel system would generate about 20-40 kWh a day (big range due to specific design of system and location). https://www.solarchoice.net.au/blog/how-much-energy-will-my-solar-cells-produce/

Barg’s new found love (shhh) is said to have up to 180kWh of battery! https://www.engadget.com/2018/12/11/rivian-building-longest-lasting-batteries-ev/ So unless your roof is supporting around 4-9 times the panel count of a “standard” 5kW system (and also you’re running a total of around 20kW to 45kW of inverter), you’re not filling that baby from your residential PV system.

Say you’re happy to settle for a low range Tesla 3 with 50kWh of battery capacity ... if you’re not going full range each day and/or topping up elsewhere, you may get away with just a standard roof top 5kW system. But if you’re planning on being away from the house during the day and charging at night, let’s buy some more (lithium) batteries to store the daily charge to drop to the car at night. https://electrek.co/2017/08/08/tesla-model-3-battery-packs-50-kwh-75-kwh-elon-musk/

The sun won’t charge you, but maybe the house battery supplier and installer and upgraded PV system will need some PLS dividends for the upgrade.
