As you say the issues really are with transactions. Bitcoin can only handle around 5 to 7 per second, with transaction pending as it goes into your wallet . . . Visa can handle up to 30,000 per second as an example.
When the infrastructure is in place it will be a different story, also for many other crypto's.
Watch out for an exchange called BAKKT soon to launch, we'll see how it works as more of a trading platform for crypto's
