The share market closed at its highest in a week amid optimism that cooling inflation will allow the US Federal Reserve to halt a year-long series of interest rate hikes tonight.
A third day of gains steered the ASX 200 up 23 points or 0.32% to 7162. Advances in resource stocks, banks and supermarkets helped offset a sharp sell-off in healthcare giant CSL following a profit warning. The index's third-largest company by market weighting fell 6.84%.
Overnight, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at 14-month highs after a slowdown in inflation sharpened expectations the Fed will leave benchmark rates unchanged tonight. S&P 500 futures were flat at the Australian market close.
