The share market slumped to an eight-week low as the heavily-weighted financial and material sectors both lost more than 1.7%. The ASX 200 shed 1.05%, closing at 7138, its weakest finish since March 30.
Today's fall was the market's fourth in a row, mirroring a similar run for the Dow as a deadline to raise the US government debt limit nears without a deal on the table.
Tech stocks offered a haven. The I.T. sector jumped 2.42% to its highest level in 13 months.
