    Thanks afternoon crew.

    End-of-day summary:

The share market eked out its first advance in four sessions as bargain-hunters dipped their toes after Wall Street logged its longest losing streak of 2023.

Gains in iron ore miners, Santos and some of the banks outweighed declines in defensive sectors. The ASX 200 finished 13 points or 0.19% ahead at the end of a choppy session that saw it swing from gains to losses and back again.

The market struggled to retain its early gains as interest rate concerns and geopolitical worries continued to weigh. Overnight, the S&P 500 eased 0.17% to a fifth straight loss, the benchmark's worst run since last December.

Last night's close was the weakest since late May for both the Dow and S&P 500. By comparison, the ASX 200 yesterday finished at its lowest since October 27 last year.
