Day traders' weekend lounge June 16 - 18

End-of-day wrap:

A fierce afternoon rally helped sweep the share market to its strongest close in three weeks ahead of a long weekend in the US.

The ASX 200 almost doubled its morning tally by this afternoon's close to finish 76 points or 1.06% ahead. The advance gained momentum as the index broke through a downtrend that had developed since mid-April.

Energy providers, utilities and tech and consumer stocks spearheaded a rally that lifted 10 of 11 sectors. AGL, Whitehaven Coal and Liontown Resources were the day's best performers.

Wall Street remains closed on Monday for the Juneteenth public holiday. At the Australian close, S&P 500 futures were holding near break-even.
