End-of-day summary:

The share market stepped back from record levels at the end of a positive month for investors.

The ASX 200 finished the final session of November just eight points or 0.1% in the red after losing as much as 54 points in early action. Gains in resource stocks and tech companies helped offset weakness among REITs, banks, industrials and healthcare providers.

Today's fall took a little of the shine off a strong month that delivered a string of new highs, the most recent just yesterday. For the month, the index gained 276 points or 3.38%.

Wall Street took a break overnight for the annual Thanksgiving holiday. Trade resumes tonight for a holiday-shortened half-session.
