    Thanks afternoon crew.

    End-of-day summary:

The share market pared a losing week as investors snapped up defensive assets and mining stocks following another bruising session on Wall Street.

The ASX 200 bounced 15 points or 0.21% off yesterday's 12-month closing low. Supermarkets, gold miners and utilities were amongst the day's best performers, offsetting declines in tech stocks, industrials, CSL and Macquarie Group.

Today's rally cut the index's loss for the week to 74 points or 1.07%. This week's decline was the fifth in six weeks and brought up a 12-month low yesterday.

Buyers were encouraged this session by a recovery in US equity futures following a well-received trading update from Amazon this morning. S&P 500 futures lifted 0.6% as the retail giant gained 5.34% in after-hours trade.
