BHP recorded a heart stopping record US$6.4 billion loss, its' first since taking on the lamentable Billiton assets in 2001.
A horror show of asset writedowns, impairments and exceptional items were largely responsible for the blowout.
U.S. stocks eased from record highs on Tuesday as Fed Reserve officials fueled speculation of a possible interest rate hike this year.
The S&P telecommunications index and utilities sectors led the day's declines, dropping 2.1 percent and 1.2 percent respectively.
New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley said a rate hike in September was possible, citing evidence of wage gains and a tighter labor market that could boost inflation.
"I don't think most people are expecting the Fed to actually hike in September ... (but) we've had a strong market and a couple of good jobs numbers," said Michael O’Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Low interest rates continue to buoy stocks to record highs. `

Oil settled up nearly 2 percent on Tuesday, hitting five-week highs as OPEC spoke of Saudi Arabia's desire for higher crude prices while Russia met the producer group to discuss the market.
