US markets were in a holding pattern overnight, eeking out a small gain, pathetic really, as improved manufacturing numbers offset a slump in auto sales.
The S&P rose .1% , the Nasdaq .2% on moderately improving volume.
Mostly traders looked for clues on future interest rate direction, didn't find any, called it a draw and went home.
Oil settled down on Wednesday on technical resistance at the $50 level, retracing earlier declines after OPEC sources said the group will likely consider a production curb at its forthcoming meeting.

Gold ended the U.S. day session with modest losses in a choppy, two-sided trading affair Wednesday. Some short covering in the futures market and some bargain hunting in the cash market lifted prices early on. However, upbeat U.S. economic data released later in the morning helped to drag prices down from their daily highs.
