The ASX shrugged off a lacklustre start to rise strongly on a US spending deal that sent Wall Street futures solidly higher.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 closed up 32 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 5956.5, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 0.5 per cent.
Following the index's fortunes were the big banks, which at various points rose above and below Friday's level before rising strongly in late trading.

Gold prices were ending the U.S. day session lower and scored a three-week low Monday. There were no major geopolitical developments over the weekend to rattle the markets and the U.S. stock indexes are at or near record highs with no signs of easing. Those are bearish elements for safe-haven gold. June Comex gold was last down $11.20 an ounce at $1,257.10.July Comex silver was last down $0.331 at $16.86 an ounce.
