The Australian sharemarket closed not far off a two-year high on Friday, holding onto most of this week's outsized gains.
The S&P/ASX200 index shed 0.5 per cent in choppy trade on Friday as some investors took profits on the last day of the quarter. But the benchmark index still notched up a weekly gain of 1.9 per cent.
Feeding the rally this week was an $8 billion bonanza in dividends distributed to shareholders over the past five sessions. The payments aren't over, with a further $7.2 billion to be distributed next week.
"The banks continue to lead the market higher and [are] helped by a recovery in resources with commodity prices bouncing backs [from recent selloffs] across the board," said Bell Potter senior stockbroker Richard Coppleson.

Oil prices were mixed on Friday after a three-day rally ran out of steam, teeing up the oil market's worst-performing quarter since 2015 as investors fret that growing U.S. supplies are undermining OPEC-led production cuts.
WTI settled 25 cents, or half a percent, higher at $50.60 a barrel on the day, but ended the quarter 5.8 percent lower.
