The S&P/ASX 200 index added 20 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 5876 points, after rebounding from early afternoon lows that would have left the benchmark measure in the red.
BHP Billiton jumped 3.5 per cent, while Woodside Petroleum added 1.6 per cent. Rio Tinto rose 2.7 per cent, Fortescue 5.2 per cent and South32 3.5 per cent.
Wall Street ended lower, falling into the red in the final hour, after the Federal Reserve's committed to further monetary tightening this year.

Overnight the S&P 500 was down 0.31%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.20%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.58%. Stocks had rallied earlier in the day on a massive beat for private payrolls numbers.
The Fed could reduce its balance sheet during its March meeting, including the possibility of ending its policy of reinvesting principal payments. Reducing the balance sheet could have the same impact on the markets as a rate hike. The Fed currently holds $4.5 trillion in bonds on its balance sheet.

Oil prices eased from one-month highs on Wednesday, as a surprise increase in U.S. crude inventories to a record high offset support from an outage at the largest UK North Sea oilfield.
Prices rose early, then turned negative after the U.S. government reported a weekly rise in crude inventories of 1.6 million barrels.
WTI settled Wednesday's session 12 cents higher at $51.15, after hitting a session peak of $51.88.

The U.S. stock indexes have in late-afternoon trading dropped well off their daily highs that saw solid gains earlier in the day. The big reversal in equities has lifted the safe-haven gold market well off its daily lows to trade near steady on the day.  The U.S. dollar index has come down from its daily high and that's also a positive daily element for the precious metals market bulls.
