A softer opening is set this morning as US markets ended little changed on Wednesday, though the Nasdaq eked out another record high close, as investors assessed the outlook for U.S. interest rates.
Investors have been weighing the likelihood of a rate hike this month from the Federal Reserve, with recent economic data including last Friday's weaker-than-expected jobs report suggesting the U.S. central bank could hold off for now. 1
The Federal Reserve’s beige book said U.S. economic conditions continue to expand at a modest pace, and the Fed expects more of the same in the coming months.
Traders and investors are awaiting Thursday’s meeting of the European Central Bank. The ECB will issue fresh economic forecasts and assessments at this meeting. The consensus for this meeting is that the ECB will make no significant moves on EU monetary policy.2

Oil prices rose 1.5 percent on Wednesday as the market focused on the possibility that the world's top producers would agree on an output freeze.
Trade was choppy as some traders eyed U.S. oil inventory data due late Wednesday and Thursday morning for clearer direction.
Brent futures rose 72 cents to settle at $47.98 a barrel after trading between $46.97 and $48.10.
U.S. crude traded between $44.55 and $45.58 before finishing 67 cents higher on the day at $45.50. That was a third day of gains in a row for the U.S. futures. 3

Gold and silver prices ended the U.S. day session weaker Wednesday, on some profit taking from recent gains that pushed both metals to a three-week high overnight. This afternoon’s beige book report was not a markets-mover.
