If you want to buy say 10k worth of Non leading stock, they way they work is:

10k - 7.5k (the limit for NL stock) = 2.5k.

Of that difference they require 50%.
Also I don't think CommSec has ever changed its limits.

And as amulet said, if you are serious, get webiress. If you are trading with CommSec, you can get IRESS if you do 8 trades in a month. I just subscribe beginning of the month and then when i do 8 trades they just don't charge.
