Actually those small Chi-x orders you see going through are more likely just HFT's low risk probing the buy/sells looking/testing for patterns & bigger orders. Whether they are probing looking for bigger orders to come out & front run, well people can make up their own mind.

Most genuine broker orders go through both exchanges (some also dark pools) and land on the ASX. Can't sit on both exchanges.

If you had a larger order sitting in Chi-x they probably wouldn't trade or just hit you with tiny orders occasionally and leave you with a part fill.

When I used to trade the US markets the number of ECN's were large and depended on what broker you used to trade through as to what ECN you could trade on.
