It's a holiday today in Hawaii (isn't every day?) to mark the islands' admission to the good ol' US of A. Hawaii has been part of the union since 1959, becoming the 50th state after 94 per cent of the nation voted in favour in a referendum. Statehood Day started as a holiday a decade later.
