Outlook for the day: Positive after US stocks continue to pare August losses.
ASX futures: up 25 points or 0.35%
Overnight themes:
- US stocks continue to claw back some of their losses for this month following a Federal Reserve pledge on Friday to be "careful" with rate hikes.
- "The fact that [Fed Chair] Powell didn't come out and say anything particularly hawkish or particularly unnerving to markets - that has proven to make this a bit of a risk-on day" - Ross Mayfield, Investment Strategy Analyst, Baird.
- Wall Street's main indices rally for a second session ahead of inflation and jobs data later in the week.
- Nvidia, Apple and Meta are among the leading movers. Dow component company 3M jumps 5.22% on plans to resolve a lawsuit over defective earplugs. A deal to sell its investment advisory business lifts Goldman Sachs 1.82%. US-listed Chinese stocks are boosted by a Chinese decision to halve the stamp duty on its share market.
- The S&P 500 trims its worst monthly loss since December to 3.4%. The Dow is down 2.6% and the Nasdaq 4.5%, according to CNBC.
- Growth sectors lead the rally. Tech +0.81%. Industrials, financials and materials log solid gains. Utilities are the only loser, dipping 0.04%.
