Our brief tour of French breakfast cuisine was bound to reach French Toast. Only they don't call it French Toast, they call it Toast. (Dad joke!) Actually, they give it the infinitely superior name of Pain Perdu - that's 'Lost Bread' to you and me. 'Lost' because it was originally a way to use up stale or lost bread by soaking it in eggs and frying it. A French twist is to add Grand Marnier to the egg mix. That I'd like to try. Other versions use cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, even wine.
