Today is the Olav's Eve public holiday in the Faroe Islands, one of the world's smallest and most remote nations. The islands lie in the north Atlantic, somewhere north of Scotland between Iceland and Norway. Today is the start of a summer festival (temperatures reach a balmy 12C) lasting several days to mark the death of Saint Olaf (Olav) at a battle in 1030. Diet on the islands is limited by geography and climate. Think smoked sheep's meat, fermented fish and whale blubber. Don't be shy - you might like it.
