A traditional breakfast in Costa Rica consists of Gallo Pinto accompanied by sides such as eggs, cheese and plantains. Gallo Pinto is a mixture of cooked white rice and slow cooked beans. Either black beans or red beans can be used for the Pinto recipe.The dish is typically flavoured with a local condiment called Salsa Lizano and often garnished with pepper and coriander.
