Today is the Sette Giugno public holiday in Malta, which commemorates a shameful incident on this day in 1919 when British troops fired into a crowd of protestors, killing four. The shootings were the culmination of a series of riots over colonial rule that led to important reforms, a new constitution and -eventually- independence. Malta does a great line in crusty bread.
