BreakfastMalta's strategic position in the Mediterranean made it a natural naval base for the great colonial powers of Europe and Africa. Everyone from the Romans and Greeks to the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Arabs, Normans, French and Brits have occupied the island. Little wonder the Maltese celebrate the day they finally kicked out the most recent of those occupiers. The last British troops withdrew in 1979, an event celebrated each year on March 31 as Freedom Day.
