    Today is 'Battle of Las Piedras Day' in Uruguay, a national holiday to celebrate a key moment in the fight for independence. On this day in 1811, revolutionaries under Jose Artigas defeated Royalist forces loyal to the occupying Spanish colonialists. We're serving tortas fritas, a popular street food.
