It's a long weekend in much of Australia, but there's a more important holiday happening overseas. That's right: it's Peat Cutting Monday on the Falkland Islands. Traditionally, islanders got a day off to cut peat (essentially flammable soil composed of decomposed vegetable matter) for fuel for the long South Atlantic winter. Peat cutting has fallen out of fashion with the advent of alternative heat sources, so most of the islanders will be fishing and camping instead. Breakfast is one of the brunch options at the Waterfront Kitchen Cafe in Stanley.
