South American nations seem to like to hold public holidays to celebrate famous battles with each other. Today is Peru's turn. They're taking a day off to mark the Battle of Angamos, despite the fact it seems to have ended in total defeat. According to Wikipedia, the Chilean navy effectively eliminated the Peruvian fleet on this day in 1879, clearing the way for a land invasion. Traditional breakfast foods in Peru include tamales, chicharron, butifarra and papaya juice.
