BreakfastToday is the Gibraltar Day national holiday. It commemorates a referendum in 1967 when Gibraltarians were asked whether they wanted to remain under British sovereignty with elements of self-government or move under Spanish rule. Cuisine on 'The Rock' tends towards the worst extremes of British cooking, but there is one distinctive local breakfast dish. Calentita, the national dish, is a kind of oven-baked cross between a savoury pancake and a pizza. It's made with chickpea flour, olive oil, water, salt and pepper. Served hot without toppings.
