    Hi HLL,
    re nickel - its a major component of some stainless steels but there are many other types of steel that don't use it. In some respects you could regard it as a "discretionary" component of steel-making, though for some uses it is essential, it does have substitutes so use can drop sharply in times of cost cutting.
