THE mineworkers' union fears further mine closures and job losses after Brazilian operator Vale decided to close its Integra mines at the cost of 500 jobs.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union district president Peter Jordan said the union had concerns about other mines in the Hunter Valley.

Mr Jordan said the union would meet with the company on Wednesday before separate mass meetings of Integra open-cut and underground workers on Friday.

He called on the company to come clean about its intentions for the mines, saying it owed it to the workforce and the wider community.
‘‘When big mining companies like Vale stop and start production they are playing with the livelihoods of mineworkers, their families and communities,’’ Mr Jordan said.

Integra said on Saturday its open-cut and underground mine had been on "care and maintenance" because of "unsustainable financial losses", believed to have been about $100 million in the past year
