Living in Australia there are a few things that cast impressions into the psyche. One is is the outback, which even if most Australians never experience it, it still casts/looms over you. A sense of pride and awe.
The second is the ANZAC tradition. The whole nation building experience, and every year, the future echoes (to steal a Red Dwarf phrase) of the next ANZAC day coming to meet you. Never quite experienced anything quite like it anywhere else.
