Wasn't powerbeat started by Peter Witehira, a backyard inventor who saw a problem with his car battery going flat when he left the lights on and decided to cut open a battery with a hack saw, figure out how it worked and design a new one that would always have enough charge to start the car? I barely remember it though as I was just a young lad back in the late 80's when it all came along.

I seem to remember him coming up with other wonderful and whacky ideas like windscreen wipers that clean bugs off your windows as they wipe. Sounds like an interesting guy.
