    sorry to butt in to this interesting conversation but since Pete is on his own I'd like to offer some support ...whilst I agree that you need to do it for real to truly learn and that you can start off very small if you wish ,both reasonable points,I think Pete's point re the total novice is very valid .

    I don't see any problem at all with the novice or even the not so novice paper trading for fun or hopefully education ...where's the harm in that ? There isn't any endeavour I know of in any field where you jump straight in and have any idea what you're doing .Paper trading initially may suit some temperaments .It was never for me but I think to call it completely useless or some of the other colourful descriptions is plan pig headedness .I think it might also save the novice a few shekels in the shorter term
