A surge in energy prices and better-than-expected profit reports from Goldman Sachs and others helped stocks Tuesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) added 25 points, or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index (SPX) gained 10 points, or 0.8%.
The Nasdaq composite (COMP) gained 20 points, or 0.8%.
Analyst said "The Goldman risk has been built into the market, along with some of the fear about financial reform regulation. Now earnings are back in the driver's seat."
In London, the benchmark FTSE 100 index closed up 55.78 points, or 0.97 per cent, at 5,783.69 points.
FRANKFURT - The DAX gained 101.79 points, or 1.65 per cent, to 6,264.23.
PARIS - The CAC 40 index jumped 56.18 points, by 1.41 per cent, to 4,026.65.
Oil prices rose dramatically in New York trade on Tuesday, amid optimism about the state of the economy and the prospect of transatlantic air travel resuming.
New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in May, rose two US dollars a barrel to $US83.45, erasing Monday's losses.
The Australian market has received strongly positive leads from offshore trading overnight, with most major markets comfortably higher, including oil and precious and base metals.
At 0700 AEST on the Sydney Futures Exchange, the June share price index contract was 44 points higher at 4,973 points.
In economic news on Wednesday, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations releases its jobs vacancy report for April, and Westpac and the Melbourne Institute release their indices of Economic Activity for March.
GOLD up $3.40 to US$1,139.20 an ounce
SILVER up 1c to US$ 17.821 an ounce
COPPER up 1.65c at US$3.5135 a pound
