'Market Focus' in the US this evening

"Another weak retail sales report, especially if combined by another weak consumer sentiment report, could trip a wave of second-half downgrades. But if the opposites prove true, look for a big rally in the stock market." [Source: nasdaq.com., Mark Pender]

'Market Reflections' from previous session (12.08.2010)

"Good news is growing scarce. Instead of falling sharply as expected, jobless claims inched higher in the latest week signaling early trouble for the August employment outlook. Disappointing sales from router-maker Cisco added to the trouble for the stock market where the Dow fell 0.6 percent to 10,319."

"Most commodities extended their declines as the outlook for the U.S. recovery dims and, no less importantly, the outlook for Chinese growth is scaled back. Oil fell 3.0 percent to $75.75. Commodities are also getting hurt by the dollar which is rising on the flight out of risk. The dollar index rose 0.4 percent to 82.59. Gold, up 1.3 percent to $1,215, also stands to benefit from the flight out of risk." [Source: nasdaq.com., Mark Pender]

Of note in the US this evening:-

  2. Consumer Price Index [ Market moving indicator]
[The Consumer Price Index is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly changes in the CPI represent the rate of inflation.]

  3. Retail Sales [ Market moving indicator]
[Retail sales measure the total receipts at stores that sell durable and nondurable goods. Consumer spending accounts for two-thirds of GDP and is therefore a key element in economic growth.]

  4. Consumer Sentiment [ Merits extra attention]
[The University of Michigan's Consumer Survey Center questions 500 households each month on their financial conditions and attitudes about the economy. Consumer sentiment is directly related to the strength of consumer spending. Consumer confidence and consumer sentiment are two ways of talking about consumer attitudes. Among economic reports, consumer sentiment refers to the Michigan survey while consumer confidence refers to The Conference Board's survey.]

  5. Trade Balance (Jun) [ Merits extra attention]
[The Trade Balance released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau is a balance between exports and imports of total goods and services. A positive value shows trade surplus, while a negative value shows trade deficit. It is an event that generates some volatility for the USD. If a steady demand in exchange for US exports is seen, that would turn into a positive growth in the trade balance, and that should be positive for the USD.]

  6. Thomas Hoenig speaks
[Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President - Presentation to the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce in Lincoln, Nebraska.]

  7. Business Inventories
[Business inventories are the dollar amount of inventories held by manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. The level of inventories in relation to sales is an important indicator of the near-term direction of production activity. (Bureau of the Census)]

... of note in Australia on Monday of next week:-

  8. New Motor Vehicle Sales (MoM) (Aug) and New Motor Vehicle Sales (YoY) (Jul)
[The New Motor Vehicle Sales released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics measures motor vehicle sales in Australia. It is considered as an indicator for consumer confidence. It is worth noting that motor vehicle sales are a small component of the overall Australian economy. Generally speaking, a high reading is seen as positive (or bullish) for the AUD, while a low reading is seen as negative (or bearish).]
