Job vacancies rise in 3 mths to Nov - ABS

The number of job vacancies in Australia rose between August and November, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said on Wednesday.

The total number of vacancies in November 2010 was 193,200, in seasonally adjusted terms, 6.6 per cent higher than the estimate of 181,300 from the previously quarterly survey in August.

The number of job vacancies in the private sector was 175,400 in November, a rise of 7.1 per cent from 163,800 in August.

There were 17,800 vacancies in the public sector in November, up by 1.7 per cent from the 17,500 vacancies recorded three months earlier.

The November estimates for total vacancies and for vacancies in the private sector now have surpassed the previous highs in the series recorded in the first half of 2008, before budget pressures at the ABS prompted the suspension of the survey after the May 2008 survey.

The survey, which was begun in 1979, was resurrected from November 2009, leaving a gap of five quarterly surveys for which the ABS says it's unable to construct reliable estimates.
