Jobless rate sinks to 5%

The nation's jobless rate has fallen again, touching 5 per cent for the month of December, official data show.
That is the lowest since January 2009. However, there were just 2300 jobs created, well short of the 25,000 new positions analysts had expected.
Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today show the headline unemployment rate was down from 5.2 per cent the previous month.

The data show that the participation rate - the proportion of people working or looking for work - fell markedly, translating into a lower unemployment rate. But the economic signals are not strong
